As the founder of Craft Beyond Code, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time wrestling with the fundamental questions of leadership, especially within engineering teams. My journey, from technical co-founder to manager, has revealed a simple, yet profoundly effective truth: the 1:1 meeting isn’t just a scheduling slot; it’s the cornerstone of empowering your engineering leaders.
For too long, 1:1s have been treated as status updates or simply a place to assign tasks. But my experience – and the insights I’ve gleaned from countless conversations – demonstrate that they’re far more critical. They’re the vehicle for building trust, fostering growth, and, ultimately, driving exceptional performance.
My approach to 1:1s, rooted in the lessons from "Initial Steps and First Lessons,” centers on moving beyond the surface. It’s about truly understanding what's driving your team member, not just what they’re working on. I’ve found that effective delegation and leveraging diverse perspectives – something I’ve always championed – become exponentially easier when you’ve built a strong, trusting relationship.
Here’s what a truly empowering 1:1 looks like:
It's worth noting how Craft Beyond Code is designed to facilitate this. The tool’s focus on tracking 1:1s and projects allows me to see where my team members are spending their time and identify potential areas for support – directly addressing the issue of communication highlighted in "Streamlining Communication: The Value of Documentation”.
Importantly, prioritizing 1:1s contributes to preventing burnout, which I explore further in “Beyond Burnout: The Hidden Costs of Extended Working Hours”. Dedicated time for connection and open dialogue can provide vital respite.
Now, I'd love to hear your experiences! Have you found 1:1s to be a game-changer? What strategies do you use to make them truly impactful? Share your insights and stories on LinkedIn or Facebook – tag Craft Beyond Code and let's build a conversation about empowering engineering teams.
